The 1967 Mercury Cyclone’s major competition was Pontiac’s GTO!

A Comet Cyclone GT paced the 1966 Indy 500. This brought a lot of attention to Mercury with everything from street racing by civilians all the way up to the ELIMINATOR 1 funny car run by Don Nicholson. You will turn heads on the street or the track with a Mercury muscle car that you won’t see at every car show.

From a collecting standpoint, the best of the Comets are indeed the 1966 and 1967 cars, and genuine GTs command a significant premium. Styling that still looks killer today — and at a price that won’t break the bank — the Cyclone GT could be for you.

Beginning in 1966, the Mercury Comet grew from a compact to become a mid-sized car. It was now based on the same chassis as the Ford Fairlane intermediate (and the previous Mercury Meteor intermediate which was only offered in 1962-1963). The Comet Cyclone started life in 1964 as a hardtop coupe and in 1966 Mercury added the GT hardtop coupe, the GT convertible coupe, and the convertible coupe. The GT coupe was a 3,419 units production run.

Engines technology available in the Comet for 1966 included a:

1) 390 cid. V8 engine with a 2-barrel carburetor producing 265 hp. at 4400 rpm.,

2) a 390 cid. V8 engine with a 4-barrel carburetor producing 275 hp.,

3) and 390 cid. V8 engine that produced 335 hp. The 335 hp. 390 cid V8 engine was standard on the Cyclone GT and optional on other models.

The Cyclone GT; when equipped with an automatic transmission was referred to as the Cyclone GTA. * see YouTube for the original author

The Comet really came into its own in 1966, with an all-new body on a two inch longer (116 total) wheelbase, new trim, and beautiful styling which was especially fetching in 2 door hardtop and convertible form.

It could be had as a Comet Caliente, Comet Cyclone or Comet Cyclone GT.

The other major news for 1966 was the addition of the big Ford FE block 390 V-8, with 265 hp standard on the Comet Cyclone GT. Two additional power upgrades were available at extra cost; 275 hp (automatic transmission only) and 335 hp.

For 1967, a new instrument panel and new padded steering wheel center were the biggest changes to the car itself, with a new grille and trim changes seen outside. Under the hood, the 390 was now down to two versions; 270 hp and 320 hp (now standard on the Cyclone GT).

Also in 1966, the Mercury Cougar brand welcomed the new SR-7 which came standard with leather upholstery.

Fewer Cyclone models are finished in the extremely unique soft color pallette and can boast the rare factory fiberglass hood ( and front bumpers for weight reduction ). The factory accurate GT’s are powered by the 330hp 390V8 and have (the option?) of a T6 transmission. It’s stopped by power disc brakes, not often found on cars of this era. Look for the A/C vents also for factory Air Conditioning. Mercury Sport-O_Matic automatic transmission ‘shifting’ is a cool option too.

The Mercury Comet was — a nicer version of the Ford Falcon — so they got the big block FE Ford engines. The 390 & 427 from 66 to 68.

Then Comet was a Mercury version of the Maverick up to 1976; when they quit building them to make way for the Fairmont /Zephr compacts which were more a mid size car by then because of the down sizing industry wide because of the Arab Oil embargo/gas crisis and the changing mind of the country on how big a car should be …

More about Mile High Garage — Speed Shop — When not driving, buying, upgrading or pushing power sports to the next level; we write, photograph and video things in motion … much of the time while participating in power sports activities, road rally’s and aviation conquests — rock concerts too ! We are all gearheads in our hobbies and professions piling up cool motor sport and power sports info on cloud drives — with nowhere to go with it. Maybe some of it will be cool here?!

We wanted to publish the best of it in an organized and compelling manner. And it just so happened that one of us specializes in the software! — the rapid prototyping of Mobile Websites and Applications! Imagine that ;

Look for a great depth of detail on Porsche 928’s, Private Race Tracks, Auto Clubs, Muscle Cars and the art and maybe science of buying and selling at Auctions. More recently we have much interest from our Aviation friends that want their own space too. After much thought on how to coherently offer this up packed into a Mobile App — we easily made the decision to add diversity of thought and knowledge on power sports, performance technology and design, hacks, restoration, new components, upgrades, modifications, etc.

We are seeing a sea change in the Power Sport Builder industry — where the customer wants to assemble a ‘Thing’ — from a choice of validated components. So much happening in a compressed time-frame! Let’s see if we can add some compelling thought value and insight here.

We have tons of cool Audio and Video we plan to share with you!
